Lambeth Liberal Democrats call for measures to protect Waterloo residents from HGVs
Today, Councillor Donna Harris, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition Group on Lambeth Council has called on Lambeth’s Labour Council to take urgent action on the so-called ‘Waterloop’ through Short Street and Ufford Street in Waterloo & South Bank ward.
This Friday, 4th August, a Council decision will be taken as to whether the current Experimental Traffic Order on The Cut will be made permanent. As this decision is considered, the Liberal Democrats are urging the Council to listen to the concerns of residents regarding the scheme as it currently stands.
These include: increased traffic flow through residential streets; disturbances caused by heavy commercial vehicles; damage to property and infrastructure; risks to pedestrians and cyclists; and a detrimental impact on the Children’s Play Area in Ufford Street, which is part of a Conservation Area.
Cllr. Harris proposes the implementation of alternative measures including the restriction of coaches and HGVs from entering specific roads, the implementation of modal filters, and enhanced traffic management through clear signage and traffic management orders.
