Lib Dem Councillors Join Lambeth’s Spectacular Windrush Procession
Donna, Matthew and Ben watched the procession march from Herne Hill to Windrush Square, telling the story of the rich history, spirit and culture of Caribbean people who have settled in the UK. It was organised by the Brixton Project, in partnership with Lambeth Council, and inspired by the work of local artist Hew Locke.
The procession was a part of a series of special events organised by Lambeth Council to honour the enduring economic, social, and cultural contribution the Windrush generation has made to the United Kingdom.
HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks on June 22, 1948, carrying around 500 men and women on board. It was the first ship to bring workers from the Caribbean who had answered Britain’s call to help fill post-war labour shortages.
Cllr Donna Harris, Leader of the Lambeth Liberal Democrat Council Group, said, “The hard work and determination of the Windrush generation helped to rebuild Britain in its time of need, and we should be forever grateful.
Lambeth was the first home of the Windrush generation in the UK, and it was a privilege to enjoy the celebrations which were filled with such pride, vibrancy, and talent.
But it’s also a sobering reminder that far too many people’s lives are still blighted by discrimination, inequality, and injustice in the UK. Only one in four applicants to the Windrush compensation scheme have received payments. We must keep fighting for the recognition they deserve.”
