We Can cut crime
Under Labour, people convicted of serious crimes walk free because the jails are full, most prisoners re-offend when they leave jail. In Lambeth, Labour opposed a centre to get drug addicts off the streets. Lib Dems want effective measures that will stop people committing crime, not incompetence and gimmicks. 5 POINT ACTION PLAN ON CRIME1 MORE POLICE, not PCSOs who can't touch criminalsLambeth Labour wants 'plastic police' who cannot touch criminals for fear of getting hurt. Lib Dems want wardens where they are popular, in places like Streatham. We also want Lambeth to follow Lib Dem Liverpool and pay for more real police, who can take on the criminals, not be forced to run away from them. 2 Halt the saturation of pubs and clubs in our town centres
In power, Lib Dems wanted a ban on more pubs and clubs in places like Clapham. Labour said no and have done nothing about it in power. The Labour Government is just as bad nationally, Local authorities should close rowdy pubs and clubs, not have to abide by centrally determined licensing policies. Only 12 landlords a year on average since 1997 have been prosecuted for allowing drunken or riotous behaviour. Planning laws should be used to encourage bars to have more seating, while availability of public transport should be more of a factor when deciding licensing applications. 3. Give communities more say on crime
Many of the poorest people in this borough want to see money spent on cutting crime, not spin doctors. So do we. That is why we would give cash Labour is giving to spin doctors to local people to spend tackling the crime that worries them. 4. Give young people hope, not gimmicksWhile Labour wants to criminalise more and more children, Lib Dems want practical measures that will cut youth crime. We would spend more money on giving teenagers more things to do and encourage teenagers to take more responsibility. 5. Sensible sentencing - life must mean lifeUnder Labour, sentencing is a shambles We lock up people with mental health issues, while real criminals walk free. We need a sensible approach to sentencing. Life must mean life and violent criminals should be locked up. We should encourage non-violent criminals to pay something back to their community and stop making innocent people better criminals by putting them in jail.
