UNICEF Reports that Britain is at the bottom of the table on child poverty

Liberal Democrats have greeted UNICEF's report on the well-being of children in rich countries with dismay.

The report, published on 14 February 2007, shows the UK coming bottom of a list of 21 European countries against a host of important criteria. Lambeth Lib Dems have written to the South London Press to raise awareness about the report and to start a local debate on these issues.

Lambeth Lib Dems has a strong commitment to anti-poverty work of the kind that is indicated by the UNICEF report. "We recognise that children grow up in families (of varying compositions) and that it is important to reach out to disadvantaged families and to offer the support that they need," said Lambeth Lib Dem spokesperson Nick Perry.

"This is why at the Council's Budget-setting meeting on 28 February, Liberal Democrats will be challenging Lambeth Labour on their record since May 2006, and will be putting forward fully costed ideas on an anti-poverty unit for the Council, which will work hand in glove with local people with direct experience of poverty to monitor and develop council policy and services.

"It is only through concrete action such as this that we will be able to start putting right some of the worrying trends outlined in the UNICEF report," added Nick.
