Winning for the London Borough of Lambeth

Labour would keep the lights out in Lambeth

12.00.00am GMT Mon 30th Jan 2006

Lib Dems have won over £17 million to replace tens of thousands of old street lights across Lambeth. Just before Christmas, a contract was signed to get the work carried out across the borough over the next four years - investment money that Labour failed to find when they ran Lambeth.

Part of the initial roll-out in 2006 includes roads in the Myatt's Fields Park and Vassall Road areas. Vassall Ward Lib Dems Adeline Aina and Steve Bradley (pictured in Knatchbull Road. SE5) say the new lights will help make the area safer and more secure.

Steve Bradley said: "Labour are unbelievable - they fail to get new lights for our area, then they vote against Lib Dem plans to solve the problem. Let's hope Labour don't get back in again!"

Labour failed to get this money when they ran Lambeth, and even opposed the Lib Dem plan for better lights. When Labour left Lambeth £28 million in the red in 2002, with debts of over £840 million, their budget for 2002/03 only gave enough funding to the Council's CCTV cameras and street lights to allow them to run for six months.
