Former Labour Mayor Fights Key Seat for Lib Dems

Former Labour Councillor Claudette Hewitt is welcomed to the Liberal Democrats by Cllr Ashley Lumsden

Labour election strategists have been thrown into complete disarray by the decision of Former Labour Lambeth Mayor and Councillor, Claudette Hewitt, to stand in the key Oval Ward for the Liberal Democrats in the May 2010 council elections.

Claudette, who has a degree in Business Law, is the latest disaffected former Labour supporter to recognise that the Liberal Democrats espouse many of the core values that they feel Labour has abandoned in recent years.

Claudette who has shown a strong interest in youth work and sports promotion - she has raised money for charity by running the London Marathon and is also a qualified football referee - has been chosen to stand for the Lib Dems in Kennington's Oval ward, where she lives, and which Labour strategists are targeting to win.

Claudette, who received a Lambeth Civic Award in recognition of her dedication and hard work for Lambeth residents and who also received the rare honour of Freedom of the City of London, believes that Labour has taken too many of Lambeth's citizens for granted over a long period and sees in the Liberal Democrats a party that truly reflects her values of fairness and equality.

Claudette said, "I have been unhappy with the local Labour Party for some time. I feel they take people - especially black people - for granted. Their promises to get everyone involved just don't materialise - keeping the top jobs for themselves. Once they've got people signed up to Labour they just use them to look like they're diverse."

Claudette added, "They think black people will always vote Labour so they don't listen to our issues. Black people must see that they have a choice over who to vote for. I've made that choice and joined the Lib Dems and I urge people to vote Lib Dem too."

Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Lambeth, Cllr Ashley Lumsden, welcomed Claudette to the Lib Dem campaign. He said, "I know how hard Claudette has worked for local people. She will make an excellent Lib Dem councillor."

"Claudette's decision to switch to the Liberal Democrats shows that everyone in Lambeth has a choice between the failed policies of the Labour party and the positive approach from the Lib Dems."
