The offical notice that shows that the story in Lambeth Life is false
Lambeth Council's relaunched publicity sheet "Lambeth Life" has been branded "Lambeth Lies" after it was caught telling porkies about the Brixton Recreation Centre.
How Lambeth Life spun the story - with a photo that isn't of Brixton Rec!
The Brixton Recreation Centre was first closed for refurbishment back in late 2006 for six weeks. But shortly after it re-opened it was announced that it would close again for a further three months starting in March 2007. After frustrating delays the building was finally reopened in mid July but most of the facilities and the changing rooms were not finished.
Now "Lambeth Life" reports that the works to the sports and leisure centre as being "complete" and that the Rec now includes "more changing rooms" and "a brand new sauna". The edition was printed and delivered at the Council Tax Payers' expense towards the end of December and is now to be pushed through letterboxes twice monthly.
However, embarrassed Leisure Bosses have hastily published a notice to leisure centre users giving details of the latest delay to services opening. They hope to open more facilities including the sauna by the middle of the month but some services including the changing areas for the gym won't re-open until the end of January - five weeks after the advertised 'completion date'.
Commenting, Cllr Ashley Lumsden, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Lambeth Council said, "Now Lambeth Life has been re-launched under the Labour Council they seem to have acquired Labour's lies and spin. Claiming "Mission Accomplished" on the Brixton Rec when leisure bosses have put back the finishing date for completing the works could be just incompetence but it certainly isn't true. And the photograph they've had to use wasn't even taken in the Brixton Rec!
"It's more a case of Lambeth Lies than Lambeth Life.
"Perhaps the next edition should come with a sachet of salt for people to take a pinch of when they sit down to read it!"
